craft log
Hello, hello! One of the coolest things about fiber arts is how much overlap there is; you can seamlessly incorporate lots of different mediums and textures into one piece... of course, that does make it more difficult to break a site up into straight forward categories! So the crafts live in the gallery below and the pages to the side include a bit of resources, tip & tricks, etc about each medium.
Enjoy and happy creating! ^^

jirachi amigurumi (?)
We've missed the 7th day of the 7th month, unfortunately, but I could still use a bit of luck right now...
I freehanded this little fella and it definitely was not the most efficient or prettiest way to go about it, lol. Basically, I found a pattern for making triangles and I've just found them very calming to make and have been throwing them into everything and seeing what they can do. This little guy, for example, has 16 of this specific triangle motif in him. In other words, you've heard of "no sew" patterns, this is the opposite: all the sewing. It's basically just a sewing project, but you just so happened to have crocheted all the bits beforehand, rather than cutting them out of felt or whatever.
Other places / ways I've also used this specific triangle pattern recently include this little stingray fella:
and the shroomish's skirt.
(To be honest, I think the proportions are too off; he was cuter as just a head. Still, I just wanted a little project to get my hands moving, so I guess he accomplished that, if nothing else...)
shroomish amigurumi
Grumpy little mushroom fella! He's full of the weighed beans and it gives just a nice bit of heft to him. And the background is a painting I did a while ago with Neocolor IIs that's just been floating around my desk -- thought it suited him nicely!
lil s
Made for Arachne for Artfight of her character, Lil S!
She's also posable, but built a bit different from the vaporeon: her limbs (both arms, and both legs)are made with the same pipecleaner stuck through her body, so they're a bit more secure. Also, I tried to make her neck with a pipecleaner (like the vaporeon), but it just wouldn't stay in right and pissed me off, so I ended up just using a toothpick. Whatever gets the job done, I guess... orz
vaporeon
I wanted to experiment more with wire armatures and posability, which I wrote about in more detail on Dreamwidth. Some extra pics: ^^
various mats from rse
I wrote about these fellas in more detail on Dreamwidth, if you were curious. In sum, I think the mats from the secret bases are cool and wanted to see if I could make them in real life. I think I might have better luck just working at them like a normal tapestry crochet rather than in the round. Or, y'know, just straight up crossstitching the pixel art, instead, lol.
Made for my coworkers for a Christmas gift exchange.
pumpkaboo amigurumi
Roughly based on Catartist MX's tutorial on Youtube, but I was kinda impatient (and also, I don't really know Spanish, lol) so I followed her basic construction and winged it the rest of the way.
mimikyu amigurumi
My first time trying to freehand something. She consists of basic shapes, so nothing too crazy -- I think it'd be interesting to experiment more with squiggly shapes and scalloped edges in the future, though! Also, the air soluble marker I used to sketch her face doesn't really want to come off, rip...
magikarp dice bag
Made following yeuyarn's pattern (which could be used for either a plush or a bag). It was very well written and I learned a lot over the course of making this, both in terms of various design techniques and basic crochet things (ex: oopsie, made her whole body inside out!). Also, I used a much bigger yarn & hook than the pattern calls for, so she ended up much bigger than I expected! Took a while to make, but I'm also quite interested in some of her other patterns, like the matching Gyarados taiyaki and the moogle & chocobo, omg...
oddish cutout tapestry
I took another break in the middle of making the magikarp bag to try a cutout tapestry crochet. I've seen some other really cool tapestries, like a butterfly shawl-thing or pillows, etc, so I wanted to see how difficult it would be to make one. The image is yoinked from Spriter's Resource, as usual, from the card flip game in Crystal (does it seem a bit familiar? lol), and I watched this video to get the basic jist of what I was doing and winged it for the rest . I'm still really bad at counting by the way, lol. Major things we've learn from this, I think, is that stitches aren't a perfect grid, so small details are a bit obscured... Perhaps a solution to this is to embroider or do slip stitches at the end?
spinda amigurumi
I found this pattern suddenly while exploring the ancient ruins of Deviantart and thought it seemed quick and cute! (I'm actually also in the middle of making a magikarp plush, but, uh,,, let's not talk about that right now, cough cough...) It seems that acrylic yarn felts much more readily than cotton, but I think it's a bit too obvious to use for large spaces (like the belly, oops). Also, it distorts the shape a bit, so that's something else to keep in mind...
victreebel dice bag
This was my first proper crochet project I've done! The body is based off this pattern from Ravelry, but I ended up Frankensteining a couple of different things together for the leaves... Mostly because I just wasn't experienced enough with written patterns and wanted to watch a video instead.
Overall, I think he turned out alright! Fits not only my set of dice, but also a deck of cards and a mini composition notebook, which is pretty handy!
pikachu keychain
Made for a friend!
oddish
Filled with the little plastic beads, so she's a pleasant weight!
phanpy
She's loosely based on this card, but I went a different direction with composition and whatnot. Besides that, I did more sewing here than I have for other needlefelting projects: the pillows in the background, of course, but also, to make her ears, I cut out shapes from a felt sheet and blanket stitched them together and sewed them on. That's a lot easier than trying to felt such a tight and precise shape from scratch! And I think the exposed stitching is rather cute, as well. Will definitely have to keep that in mind. (The sheets I got are an acrylic blend, though, not 100% wool, so it's kind of a pain to try to felt it normally.) And I tried to make the Meowth and Buneary in the background look a bit more 'simple' so they'd come off as plushies; their limbs and other things are also cut from felt sheets. By the way, you're so much more likely to stab yourself when working at such a small scale, ow!
The Phanpy herself is cute, but her front leg isn't even with the others -- not quite what I was going for, but it does make her fun to set around and pose; like she's mid step or reaching out.
retsuko ornament
Made for an online friend!
bulbasaur ornament
Made for my nephew for Christmas (along with the next couple of entries). My first time actually making one of these felt 2d ornament things -- I didn't really know what I was doing, lol. He has a back, btw:
spinarak plush
Made for my nephew! The legs were a pain in the ass in every way possible, but I think it turned out really well in the end!
luxio plush
Made for my nephew. I wrote more about making the angy little lion boy on my Dreamwidth!
pikachu & clefairy
Made for my nephew -- er, actually, originally, I made the clefairy first, just for me, but then my aunt commissioned me to make the rest of the troop. I wrote up some notes about making the pikapika on my Dreamwidth, as well.
pika: October 2024
clef: April 2024
shiny furret
shiny mareep
Based off this mareep alarm clock I've been obsessed with!
To make the fluffy texture, I took some acrylic yarn and needlefelted it down in little loops like a carpet -- took forever, but I think it was really effective!
She's now the cutest and fluffiest little pin cushion!
marill
oddish family
I tried to use pastel dust to get a cute little watercolor-y effect on their leaves... which, like, didn't not work, but also, it's just very messy. Would not recommend!
Another view of them buried:
budgie
Like the fourth thing I made, I think? A little accompanying sketch:
My first couple of attempts at needlefelting! Started with the jigglypuff, then bulba, then lapras (who I ended up giving to my sister for her birthday). These guys are tiny tiny! It's kinda cool to look back and compare...
These fellas are based off pixel art designs by the amazing @butterberrycafe on Tumblr. Aren't they just adorable?? Please check out their other spritework, also! (I wonder if Haunter feels left out? I should make him, too...)
I've been getting back into cross stitching recently, mostly because I found that I've been mindlessly scrolling scrolling scrolling on my phone so much. That's obviously horrible, so I've been trying to replace that with a different habit -- normally, I'd opt for reading, but it's difficult to concentrate when someone else is watching TV in the same room, y'know? Thus, cross stitching.
I actually had another cross stitch project I was working on, but I forgot about it and it's just been rotting in a drawer for, like, two years. And frankly, I just don't have much of an attachment to it, at all. But making tiny cross stitches? They're cute and small, fairly quick to complete -- it's like collecting achievement badges! Certainly feels more fulfilling than doomscrolling, at least!
This was just a proof of concept using little leftover scraps from other projects. It may be small but it does, at least, confirm that perforated paper is, in fact, paper and can be glued to other things rather nicely... which means you can use it for bookbinding and box-making! (Technically, I've seen people use regular aida for this sort of thing as well, but... I don't know, I just have an aversion to stitching on actual fabric for some reason. I'm fine with normal sewing, but the hoop -- it just unsettles me and I'd prefer to avoid it, if at all possible.)
