the presidential treatment

  • this is kind of a character study, i guess? it's inspired by all the things former presidents are prohibited from doing and the massive state surveilance on them at all times. i imagine it would basically work the same for country personifications, right?

Alfred sets down his Switch controller on the couch beside him and gets up. A movie, he thinks, a movie will certainly help him keep his mind occupied… His footsteps echo as he approaches the theater, echo through the empty halls frozen in time. Every inch of the House is overflowing with decades of overlapping memories, threatening to burst him apart at the seams. In this spot in 1947, here in 1886, over there in 2001… it plays on repeat. Alfred doesn’t think he can stand another godforsaken minute in this house. Ironically, the very symbol of freedom, the pride of the nation, the White House has been his prison, his personal hell, since 1800.

Alfred felt alone. But deep down, he knew he was never alone: the watchful eyes of the state will never leave him. Though, over the years, they’ve upgraded from flesh and blood to state of the art surveillance equipment, the end result is the same: his every move is judged, criticized, and potentially grounds for punishment.

Yes, he has all of the newest games and gadgets; fifty-two cars parked in the garage, none of which he is allowed to drive. But, if he asks permission and files the proper paperwork, he might allowed to take a walk around the garden (with 3-5 body guards tagging along behind, of course). On rare instances, he's even allowed to go to McDonald's (with several days notice, of course, and great public disturbance -- any building he wishes to enter must first be swept for bombers, gunmen, or any other manner of crazies). This is the price of knowledge, wealth, and power, he can't stop himself from thinking as he settles into his usual seat in the middle column, middle row, just as the latest box office hit starts playing on the big screen and he desperately tries to shut his mind off.
